Competitive Admissions
Eliminating standardized testing requirements is making
college admissions more competitive. Abigail Castillo, an admissions counselor
at Washington State University says that eliminating standardized testing
requirements gives admissions counselors a harder job selecting students, but
it does open more doors for students to apply to different schools. Schools
across the nation have paused or eliminated standardized exam requirements in
response to the pandemic. The most recent data from the U.S. Department of
Education shows that nearly 1,200 colleges that received at least 1,000 applications in 2020 reported
an average acceptance rate of 70 percent. For example, Baylor University has a
68 percent acceptance rate. An incoming freshman at Baylor University, Austin
Douglas says that she took the S.A.T. around four or five times and never got
her scores to be competitive enough to apply to certain schools. Baylor
University is one of many schools that paused standardized testing requirements
for application.
